Cultural San José
Heart of Costa Rica
About this Tour
Discover the authentic San José, from its historic theaters and colorful markets to its bohemian neighborhoods and the daily life of the locals in the heart of the Central Valley.
San José, founded in 1738, is much more than a transit point. It is the cultural and economic heart of Costa Rica, where the colonial past mixes with tropical modernity. This tour will take you beyond appearances, discovering the true essence of San José through its historic buildings, bustling markets and the warmth of its people.
The National Theater, inaugurated in 1897 with funds from the coffee tax, represents the cultural soul of the country. Its murals, inspired by the Paris Opera, narrate the history of Costa Rica through art. The Gold Museum houses the most important collection of pre-Columbian goldsmithing in America, with more than 1,600 pieces dating from 500 AD to 1500 AD.
At the Central Market, in operation since 1880, you will experience authentic Josefine life. Among its 200 stalls you will find everything from traditional remedies to the best coffee in the country, while observing how the "ticos" (Costa Ricans) live their daily lives in the center of the capital.
